With Mother’s Day just around the corner, my 6 year old daughter is giving me hints that she made gifts for me in Kindergarten. Her backpack is hidden to ensure I do not peek.

On May 14, I celebrate my 10th year of being a mom to 3 precious daughters.

Recently my oldest daughter asked me, “Mom, what do you collect?” At the time, we were shopping. Each girl was adding to their collections of Beanie Babies, trinkets and stuff little girls love. I thought and thought about what I collect. I used to collect stickers as a young girl… smelly, fuzzy, and sparkle ones. I collected all kinds! When kids entered the picture, I started scrapbooking. So I collected all the craft supplies, like card stock, paper, and more stickers, spending too much money and time at Michaels. I went on scrapbooking weekends, dedicating hours to this hobby.  I started well, creating albums for each of our girl’s first year of life. These days scrapbooking and collecting supplies is on hold.

I return back to my daughter’s question of collecting. What do I collect? I thought of things women I know collect like shoes, purses, and makeup. My daughter agreed that though I enjoy those things, I don’t collect them. Then my heart lit up when I thought of all the special homemade crafts, pictures, and rocks from my girls. We have special bins of art work, school projects and handmade prints that I have collected since their preschool days. I have collected all these memories.

So this Mother’s Day, I know it’s tempting to throw away that clay hand print from preschool that’s taking up counter space. I encourage you to find a special box and start a new collection. It’s the best collection a mom will cherish.
